Defeated South Carolina Gamecocks 38-24
Just like the Alabama Crimson Tide, the Florida Gators have a win over a 1-1 team and an 0-2 team. The 0-2 opponent of Florida is ahead of the 0-2 opponent of Alabama in our SEC Power Rankings, but the 1-1 opponent of Florida is below the 1-1 opponent of Alabama in our power rankings. As a result, it was really hard to break down schedule strength here.
Our only measuring stick deals with Tennessee football. Florida just beat the South Carolina Gamecocks by more than the Vols beat South Carolina the week before. However, the Vols beat the Missouri Tigers by more than Alabama beat Mizzou the week before. As a result, that’s enough for us to put Florida ahead of Alabama for now in these rankings.
Now, there are some points in Alabama’s favor. After all, the Tide did just blow out Texas A&M, so they looked better in their most recent outing against a 1-1 school than Florida did against an 0-2 school. But common opponents of UT is the best measuring stick. We should also point out that Kyle Trask right now likely being the Heisman favorite has to count for something.
Anyway, after this week, we’ll have a better read on how to compare these two teams. That’s because it’s Florida’s turn to play Texas A&M, who just played Alabama. After that, though, Dan Mullen’s team has to host the LSU Tigers. Those are two tough games that Florida should likely be favored in, making for an interesting upcoming slate.
