Tennessee football up two spots in SEC Power Rankings after Week 5 of 2020
Lost to Ole Miss Rebels 42-41 (OT)
All of a sudden, it’s panic time for Mark Stoops’ team. Despite losing Lynn Bowden Jr., the return of Terry Wilson Jr. at quarterback and numerous players back on the trenches and on defense gave this team lots of reasons to be excited. They were a trendy pick early on, and many thought they could potentially upset the Auburn Tigers in their season-opener.
Well, they didn’t just not upset Auburn. They have now fallen to 0-2 after a heartbreaking overtime loss to the Ole Miss Rebels, giving Lane Kiffin something to celebrate early in the season. If UK was going to be any sort of a surprise this year, that’s a win they desperately needed. A couple of key mistakes and then a missed extra point is what did it.
Now, on margin of victory alone, they should probably be higher since they should have won this game. However, a loss is a loss, 0-2 is 0-2, and like the Vanderbilt Commodores, they remain the only win for both of the teams they played. That has to count for something in our SEC Power Rankings, which is why this program joins Vandy near the bottom of the league.
An upcoming game against a bipolar Mississippi State Bulldogs team is now a must-win, as after that they have to visit Tennessee football and the Georgia Bulldogs. If they don’t win on Saturday, we could be talking about a potential 0-5 start.
