Tennessee football up two spots in SEC Power Rankings after Week 5 of 2020
Defeated Kentucky Wildcats 42-41 (OT)
How about Lane Kiffin! The former Tennessee football coach didn’t take long to make some headlines in the SEC, and thanks to his high-powered offense, his Ole Miss Rebels were able to cash in on a series of mistakes by the Kentucky Wildcats for their 42-41 overtime win. Who cares if there was a goal-line fumble and a missed extra point? A win is a win.
Now, given the fact that they won more recently than other 1-1 teams, you could make a case for this team to be higher. However, quality of victory and margin of victory matter. We couldn’t sell putting Ole Miss any further ahead of Kentucky in our SEC Power Rankings for now than we had to given how crazy that game went last weekend, even if it was on the road.
What stands out more, however, is the type of excitement this brings Ole Miss. They may have barely beaten an 0-2 team, but they also only lost to the Florida Gators by two scores at the end. There’s no shame in their other loss being to an 0-2 team.
Going forward, though, things are about to get a lot of fun. Kiffin’s Rebels host the Alabama Crimson Tide, and he’ll join a long list of former Nick Saban assistants trying to beat Saban, who helped resurrect Kiffin’s career as much as anything. After that, they visit the Arkansas Razorbacks, so there’s a chance they move to 2-2 later this month.
