Defensive end Demarcus Smith has the Tennessee football Volunteers in his top six.

The offensive and defensive coordinators of the Alabama Crimson Tide in 2016, a former and future Tennessee football head coach, are now going head to head for an Alabama prospect. UT might finally get a bet of troll revenge on Lane Kiffin.

Jeremy Pruitt’s program made the cut for 2021 strongside defensive end Demarcus Smith, who announced his decommitment from the Ole Miss Rebels Wednesday afternoon. Smith, who stands at 6’4″ and somewhere between 250 and 275 pounds, hails from Parker High School in Birmingham, Ala. and is a three-star across all recruiting services.

After his decommitment, Smith still had the Rebels in his list along with Tennessee football. Joining the two schools were the Mississippi State Bulldogs, South Carolina Gamecocks, Kansas Jayhawks and Nebraska Cornhuskers. He announced his decommitment and top six on Twitter.

Despite his three-star frame, Smith is listed as high as 272 pounds on 247Sports, meaning he could bring a level of size that Pruitt loves in his outside edge rushers. Smith had been committed to Ole Miss since August.

Now, the Rebels are still a unanimous favorite on the Rivals Future Cast and the 247Sports Crystal Ball to land him, and they are a majority favorite on the Rivals Fan Future Cast. As he noted, it sounds like he may have just committed too late.

However, there’s no reason to believe the Vols aren’t in play now given Pruitt’s connection to the state of Alabama. As of right now, they have a top 10 class but have fallen out of the top five across many services with 25 commitments. Included in that are three defensive ends, but the only four-star, Dylan Brooks, just happens to be the only weakside defensive end.

With two other three-star strongside defensive ends, Tennessee football may be a bit too loaded to land Smith. However, this comes the same day Tom VanHaaren of ESPN+ named the Vols as a team that could rise in their recruiting rankings given their early 2-0 start. Could Smith be a part of that? It’s certainly possible.
