One year after Tennessee football got the biggest win in the series over the Georgia Bulldogs, the Vols were looking to repeat their 7-2-1 campaign that they had under George Levene. UGA, meanwhile, was hoping to build off that 4-3-1 campaign.

However, down the stretch of that season for the Dawgs, Bull Whitney was caught in the “Ringer” controversy in which alumni raised money to pay professional players, known as ringers, at a time when no scholarships were allowed. Whitney was forced to resign, and Branch Bocock coached the last three games.

Entering this year, Bocock remained the head coach. He immediately got the Bulldogs to a 2-0 start with dominating wins over North Georgia and the South Carolina Gamecocks. Under Levene, UT shutout the North Carolina Tar Heels and Kentucky State College, who are now the Kentucky Wildcats, while blowing out Maryville 39-5 to get to 3-0.

This was the SIAA opener for both teams, and they were each looking pretty good. Once again, though, the Vols got the better of the Dawgs, shutting them out 10-0. In three straight years at this point, UGA hadn’t scored on Rocky Top.

Levene’s team repeated its seven wins and two losses from a year ago, but this time there wasn’t an extra tie, so it went 7-2, losing to the Vanderbilt Commodores and Alabama Crimson Tide. Meanwhile, Bocock’s team went 5-2-1, tying Alabama and losing to the Auburn Tigers.
