Tennessee football’s 10 wins vs. Georgia with both teams ranked
Sept. 11, 1993; Neyland Stadium; Knoxville, Tenn.
- Tennessee: No. 8 AP; No. 11 Coaches
- Georgia: No. 22 AP; No. 21 Coaches
After a tumultuous 1992 season, Phillip Fulmer was named head coach full-time at the end, and 1993 was his first full season as head coach. He took over a squad that had aspirations of contending for a national title with Heisman Trophy candidate Heath Shuler at quarterback, and Tennessee football had an offense that he once said was out there to score every play.
The Georgia Bulldogs, meanwhile, were coming off a 10-2 season and entered the year ranked No. 14. Ray Goff was hoping to take the next step, as his team’s loss to the Vols the previous year is why they were unable to win the SEC East.
Well, the anticipation for the showdown died before it could happen. UGA suffered a bad 23-21 upset loss at home to the South Carolina Gamecocks in its opener, a team that had delivered a similar blow to the Vols the year before. UT, meanwhile, roared to a 50-0 season-opening victory over the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs.
Somehow, the Dawgs remained in the top 25 after that loss, and they headed to Knoxville hoping to rebound. Well, they didn’t. Unable to contain the Vols offense, UGA allowed Shuler to throw two touchdown passes to Cory Fleming while Charlie Garner outplayed Terrell Davis, gaining 107 yards on the ground with a touchdown on just 15 carries. It was total domination, as UT won 38-6.
