Sept. 10, 1994; Sanford Stadium; Athens, Ga.

  • Tennessee: No. 19 AP and Coaches
  • Georgia: No. 22 AP; No 23 Coaches

A rebuilding Tennessee football team had lost the week before to the UCLA Bruins thanks to an injury to senior quarterback Jerry Colquitt seven plays into the game. That left Phillips Fulmer and David Cutcliffe with three inexperienced quarterbacks: Future Big 12 champion with the Texas A&M Aggies Branndon Stewart, future MLB star Todd Helton and Peyton Manning.

With Stewart and Manning as true freshmen, Helton got the start against UGA. On the other side, the Dawgs jumped into the top 25 with a crucial win over the South Carolina Gamecocks the week before. They had gone 5-6 the year before, and Ray Goff needed a big season. With his team 1-0 and set to host an 0-1 UT team that had so many quarterback issues, he had reason to be excited.

Given the inexperience at quarterback, Cutcliffe relied on senior running back James “Little Man” Stewart and a loaded offensive line to dash those hopes. Stewart delivered, rushing for an incredible 211 yards while scoring four touchdowns.

Terrell Davis, UGA’s star, unfortunately suffered a hamstring injury early. As a result, once again, a running back dominated and led UT to victory, winning 41-23. This would be the Vols’ only win in September, as they would fall to 1-3 before seeing Helton also get hurt and Manning take over, beginning his legendary career on Rocky Top, en route to an 8-4 finish. UGA finished 6-4-1.
