  • Tennessee: No. 3 AP
  • Georgia: No. 11 AP

Welcome to the first time Tennessee football and the Georgia Bulldogs ever faced off with both teams ranked. This was a matchup between the three most recent SEC Champions. The Vols had won it with a 9-2 record under Doug Dickey in 1967, and the Dawgs had won it in 1966 and 1968 with a 10-1 record and 8-1-2 record respectively under Vince Dooley.

As Dickey and Dooley had arrived at their respective programs the same year, 1964, they both appeared to have things rolling. This was set to be UT’s year to win the SEC title again, and wins over the Auburn Tigers, Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets and Alabama Crimson Tide got them to 5-0 and No. 3 with national title hopes in mind.

UGA, meanwhile, started 3-0 and got to No. 6 before a loss to Archie Manning’s Ole Miss Rebels dropped them to No. 14. After beating the Vanderbilt Commodores and Kentucky Wildcats to get No. 11, the SEC title was still in play when they got set to face the Vols.

Well, Rocky Top prevailed with a 17-3 win. At the time, it was UT’s third top 20 win that year, and with the gauntlet behind them, they seemed destined for a national title. However, two weeks later, they were blown out by that same Ole Miss team Georgia was blown out by.

They still won the rest of their regular season games to repeat as SEC Champions before Dickey left for the Florida Gators. Georgia, meanwhile, collapsed, failing to win a game the rest of the year en route to a 5-5- 1 record.
