Tennessee football report card in 44-21 loss at Georgia
Special teams grades
Place kicking: B+
Brent Cimaglia made every extra point, and Paxton Brooks had all but one kickoff go for a touchback. With no chances at a field goal, this was all we could judge the unit on, and in these situations, it needs to be perfect. However, one Brooks kickoff was returned to the 42-yard line, and Tennessee football’s defense needed a goal-line stop in that one. That’s why it’s a B+ grade.
Punting: A-
Punter U is coming back. Paxton Brooks averaged 47.2 yards per punt, he had two inside the 20-yard line, and two went 50 or more yards. Only two of his five punts either didn’t go 50 yards or land inside the 20. Those two are why he didn’t receive an A+ grade here, although he was still elite. One of his punts went inside the five-yard line, and another sailed 55 yards.
Return game: B
Velus Jones Jr. had three kickoffs for 63 yards and ran one back 31 yards. He did what he could. There were no chances at a punt return, as the Georgia Bulldogs’ special teams game was as elite as the Vols’ was. Either way, this is an above average grade for a unit that did what it could to try to make life easier for the Vols, as lots of other positions struggled on that front.
Overall grade: B+
There was nothing spectacular that stood out on special teams for the Vols. With a new elite kicker, Georgia was actually the story here. However, Rocky Top still had a solid day here, as the unit did everything it could to give UT an advantage.
