Losing to the Georgia Bulldogs didn’t hurt the Tennessee football Volunteers too much.

Halfway through their game Saturday, it looked like Tennessee football would move up significantly in the SEC Power Rankings. The second half prevented that, although it didn’t hurt them too much.

The Southeastern Conference has now completed three weeks of this pandemic-adjusted schedule, and only two teams remain undefeated. Those two teams are now set to face off this weekend, meaning there will be one clear-cut No. 1 team next week.

Until then, though, there are still some debates about where to put teams in our SEC Power Rankings. The tiers are a little bit more clear, but Tennessee football’s position could range from No. 3 to No. 8 in the league.

Just like we usually do, our SEC Power Rankings will take into account schedule strength, record, recency of success, head-to-head and margin of victory. A couple of major shockers over the weekend may have done more to hurt the losing team than help the winning team because of how all of this is playing out.

What’s clear is that things certain teams did during the first week of SEC play are beginning to look less and less impressive. On the other hand some teams could be decent but just have been on the wrong side of a brutal schedule to open things up.

In addition to only two undefeated teams being in the league, there is also only one winless team. Seven teams are 1-2, and four are 2-1. Of those seven 1-2 teams, two have yet to beat a team that actually has a win this season.

These little things made it easy for us to separate some programs. But how does everything else shake out? Let’s go ahead and break that down here. With the knowledge that Tennessee football didn’t fall too much, these are our SEC Power Rankings following Week 6 of the 2020 season.
