Tennessee football still in top half of SEC Power Rankings after Week 6 of 2020
Defeated Florida Gators 41-38
The flip side of what happened to the Florida Gators is that the Texas A&M Aggies had a resurgence under Jimbo Fisher. Finally, this team got a signature victory, and everything seems to have changed. Fisher appeared to be the most overrated coach in the nation before that win, but if his offense has truly come together, then things could change.
Yes, A&M’s offense truly came together. Kellen Mond finally lived up to his hype with over 300 passing yards, three touchdowns and no turnovers. Add in 174 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns by Isaiah Spiller along with 151 receiving yards and two touchdowns by Caleb Chapman, and Fisher has a quarterback, a rushing attack and a go-to receiver.
Because of all of that, no team took a greater leap this week in our SEC Power Rankings than the Aggies. After barely holding off the Vanderbilt Commodores and then getting blown out by the Alabama Crimson Tide, we didn’t know what to make of them. We still don’t, to be fair, but for right now, they belong in the top three.
Could they get into the top two? Well, Alabama is behind them, and up next are the Mississippi State Bulldogs, Arkansas Razorbacks and South Carolina Gamecocks. As a result, they could be 5-1 before their Nov. 14 showdown with Tennessee football. In fact, they could go 9-1 with the Ole Miss Rebels, LSU Tigers and Auburn Tigers to close out the season. That’s how big this win was.
