Defeated Vanderbilt Commodores 41-7

It was tough to choose between the Mississippi State Bulldogs and South Carolina Gamecocks here. Technically, Mississippi State has a better resume beating a team with a win in the LSU Tigers, as South Carolina’s only win is over the Vanderbilt Commodores. However, since LSU’s only win is over Vanderbilt as well, it’s kind of a wash at this point.

As a result, we separated teams by recency of success. South Carolina just beat Vanderbilt with the same score LSU did the previous week, but Will Muschamp’s team hadn’t played poorly before that. They were a couple of mistakes away from beating Tennessee football, and they were fighting with the Florida Gators all the way to the end.

Both of those teams are 2-1, while MSU has two losses to 1-2 teams. That alone is enough for us to put USC ahead of them right now. What’s underrated about this team is that with Collin Hill at quarterback, Shi Smith and Nick Muse as a lead receiver and tight end, and back to back 100-yard games from Kevin Harris, Mike Bobo has finally brought balance to this offense.

If Muschamp’s defense can get to where it’s supposed to be, all of a sudden, this team could be dangerous. How dangerous are we talking? Well, these guys have a tough schedule, and we’ll get a good read on that this weekend when they host the Auburn Tigers. A trip to the LSU Tigers after that also looks winnable. They should hope to split these games at least.
