Tennessee football still in top half of SEC Power Rankings after Week 6 of 2020
Defeated LSU Tigers 45-41
Eliah Drinkwitz joined Mike Leach as first-year head coaches at SEC schools to get their first win over the defending national champion LSU Tigers. After back to back blowout losses to the Alabama Crimson Tide and Tennessee football, this Mizzou offense came alive, coming away with a thrilling victory over Ed Orgeron’s opponent.
That win was enough for us to slightly put them ahead of the South Carolina Gamecocks in our SEC Power Rankings. We said we’d factor in recency, but as Mizzou and USC both won, the next difference was schedule strength. A win over LSU is better than a win over the Vanderbilt Commodores, and Mizzou’s opponents overall have two more wins than the Gamecocks’ foes.
Anyway, it’s clear that the Tigers have something with Connor Bazelak at quarterback. Mizzou settled with him over Shawn Robinson against the Vols, and he actually moved the ball well. Going 29-of-34 for 406 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions is incredible, and it now looks even more impressive that UT held them to just 12 points.
Now, though, this team gets a bye to enjoy its win, as Saturday’s matchup with Vandy has been postponed. The next time this team takes the field will be Oct. 24 against the Florida Gators, when they will have had two weeks to get used to Bazelak settled in full-time with the offense. Don’t sleep on how dangerous this team could be by that point. They have lots of potential.
