Tennessee football still in top half of SEC Power Rankings after Week 6 of 2020
Defeated Mississippi State Bulldogs 24-2
Finally, the Kentucky Wildcats got a win. There’s no reason for Mark Stoops’ team not to be 2-1 right now after letting a game slip away in their 42-41 loss to the Ole Miss Rebels the previous weeks, but at least they were able to take advantage of a Mississippi State Bulldogs team that still hasn’t figured out how to avoid turning the ball over in Mike Leach’s offense.
You could make the case for the South Carolina Gamecocks or Missouri Tigers to be ahead of this team, but UK won in more impressive fashion over MSU while Mizzou struggled to put away LSU, who lost to MSU. As a result, that combined with the recency of those events trumps the strength of schedule, which favors Mizzou but not USC.
The crazy part is Kentucky won Saturday with only 156 yards of total offense. Even with Terry Wilson back, Stoops wants to win with a great rushing attack and elite defense. That formula worked to perfection on Saturday and could continue to work in the future if special teams is on the same page as everybody else.
How well it continues to work will be determined this weekend, when UK pays a visit to Tennessee football. Kentucky never beats the Vols, but a win here would go a long way, especially when the Georgia Bulldogs, a sure loss, are up after that. Don’t sleep on these guys heading into Saturday. They could go on a run.
