Lost to Kentucky Wildcats 34-7

What do we make of Tennessee football? They just ruined everything for these rankings. The Vols suffering a blowout loss at home to the Kentucky Wildcats was not on anybody’s radar. It’s one thing, after their 1-2 start, for them to lose 44-21 thanks to a turnover-filled second half to the Georgia Bulldogs. Everybody saw that coming.

Losing like this in another turnover-filled game to Kentucky makes it even worse. Jeremy Pruitt rightly pointed that out. UT had seven turnovers, three returned for touchdowns, in that second half vs. Georgia and first half vs. Kentucky combined. However, we should note that the Vols were only down 17-7 at halftime vs. UK and then got dominated in the second half.

There’s no excuse for what happened, and fuel was added to the dumpster fire with Pruitt’s surprise decision to part ways with defensive line coach Jimmy Brumbaugh on Monday. Add in all the issues at quarterback, and there’s really no positive spin on the state of the program right now after such a bad loss.

So where do they go from here? Well, they’ll head into their bye week 2-3 with the Alabama Crimson Tide up next. After the bye, though, their only likely win the rest of the way is against the Vanderbilt Commodores. They have a slate of toss-up games and likely losses against the Florida Gators, Auburn Tiger, Texas A&M Aggies and the next team on this list.
