A women’s basketball media session leads our Oct. 23 Tennessee Vols news.

Dread is filling Big Orange Country as the Tennessee Vols football team gets set to take on the Alabama Crimson Tide on Saturday. All of the drama and concerns from this past week could get worse, but as the weekend hits, we have no more coverage to bring you on it.

Instead, our morning update on Rocky Top moves on to other sports that are around the corner. The women’s basketball season is a little over a month out, and a press conference looking ahead to that will be our main story.

Beyond women’s basketball, we also have some news involving the athletic department as a whole. We’ll close things out with a preview of upcoming events this weekend in two other sports. Let’s start with the Lady Vols presser, though.

Kellie Harper, Rennia Davis preview seasonMaria M. Cornelius, GoVols247

With the start of the 2020-2021 Tennessee Lady Vols basketball season a little over a month out, head coach Kellie Harper and star player Rennia Davis took questions in a zoom call from the media on Thursday. Harper is entering her second year on the job. Here’s a bit of what she said.

"“We’re excited about getting to play basketball and this upcoming season. I understand we still have to be flexible and we have to be able to pivot at any moment, but we’ve had good practices. We’ve had a lot of energy, a lot of enthusiasm and our players have been really positive throughout this time. They seem pretty eager to take the court against an opponent. So, I’ve been thrilled. I love the way that this team is shaping up, and I’m excited to see what we can do.”"

Pandemic costs athletic department $40 million – WBIR

The University of Tennessee is taking a big hit financially this year due to the pandemic, losing $117 million as a whole. A huge part of that is the Tennessee Vols athletic program, which has lost $40 million this year.

"Chancellor Donde Plowman said that the department has a gap of more than $15 million due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Officials said that the department is reducing costs through a tiered salary reduction plan, and a possible loan to the department from the university."

Soccer to host Texas A&M – Josh Lane, UT Daily Beacon

Coming off a tie last Sunday against the Kentucky Wildcats, the Tennessee Lady Vols soccer team returns home to face the No. 9 ranked Texas A&M Aggies Friday night at 7 p.m. ET. At 2-2-1, they will be looking to remain undefeated at home.

"Texas A&M is one of the most balanced teams in the nation in regard to offense and defense. They are the only team in the SEC to rank among the top three in both goals per game and goals-against average. The Aggies lead the league in goals per game at 2.25, while ranking third in goals-against average at 0.75."

Tennis to take part in Bulldog Challenge – UTSports

For the first time in three weeks, the Tennessee Vols men’s tennis program is set to hit the court. UT will travel to Starkville, Miss. to take part in the Bulldog Challenge.

"The Vols will join hosts Mississippi State and SEC foes Alabama, LSU and Ole Miss for the three-day event. There will be two sessions of play each day that will include sets of both doubles and singles matches, with both live video and live stats being provided here."
