Tennessee football: Vols continue slide in SEC Power Rankings after Week 8
Defeated Ole Miss Rebels 35-28
If you take away three bad calls, the Auburn Tigers could easily be 0-5 right now. They got an interception on a red zone play against the Kentucky Wildcats right after a play that should have been ruled a touchdown in UK’s favor. A game-winning field goal against the Arkansas Razorbacks was only possible after the refs ruled a Bo Nix spike behind him incomplete instead of a fumble.
This past week, a kickoff appeared to bounce of an Auburn returner, ever so slightly, and roll into the end zone. The Ole Miss Rebels seemed to recover it for a touchdown, but instead it was just ruled a touchback in Auburn’s favor.
Despite these things, though, Auburn is still 3-2. We should also note that they beat Kentucky by two scores, the spike would have been a ticky-tack call and Ole Miss got a break last week when an Auburn kick return was called by due to an unfair penalty.
Simply put, this could have gone either way. Auburn at least rebounded offensively with Nix this past weekend, as it had been struggling for a while. It’s defense did look worse, but Ole Miss has been doing that to teams for a while now.
Amidst that chaos, Auburn now gets to host a resurgent LSU Tigers team. Then they get a bye before visiting Mike Leach’s Mississippi State Bulldogs, hosting Tennessee football, visiting the Alabama Crimson Tide and hosting the Texas A&M Aggies. If they aren’t careful, they could get upset again and then fall to below .500 on the year.
