Tennessee football: Vols continue slide in SEC Power Rankings after Week 8

A resurgent Texas A&M Aggies team after beating the Florida Gators remains in the second spot of this week’s SEC Power Rankings. Jimbo Fisher’s kids are not likely to win the West after a blowout loss to the Alabama Crimson Tide, but they are still in great position for a strong season and one of their best years in a long time.
After an offensive masterpiece against UF, A&M was able to beat the Mississippi State Bulldogs with defense and an elite running game. Sure, it was against a Mike Leach-coached team, but it was still impressive, and it shows that this is a completely different team from the one that struggled to put away the Vanderbilt Commodores in the opener.
During this past off-week, consistency on both sides of the ball should have been a focus. The defense struggled against Florida, and the passing game struggled against Vandy and MSU. If they are able to put it all together, they could hold onto this spot throughout the year. Their schedule favors them doing that as well.
In addition to Tennessee football, up next for A&M are the Arkansas Razorbacks, South Carolina Gamecocks, Ole Miss Rebels, LSU Tigers and Auburn Tigers. Looking at that slate, 9-1 is definitely on the table. At this moment, they’d be favored in every one of those matchups. As a result, as one of the top teams in the league, they could stay up here for a while.
