Lost to LSU Tigers 52-24
Just like Tennessee football, we don’t know what to make of this South Carolina Gamecocks team. One week, they beat the Auburn Tigers, and then the next week, they get blown out by the LSU Tigers. Will Muschamp’s team did have to face the defending national champions coming off a bye, to be fair, but this is not the same LSU team as last year.
At issue for South Carolina remains defense. You can say that Muschamp has always been searching for an offense, but he’s supposed to be a defensive wizard, and his teams have given up 30 points or more in all of their losses. To be fair to that, they only gave up over 30 points to Tennessee football thanks to a pick-six that they shouldn’t have allowed.
Still, there’s plenty of time to regroup, and they do at least appear to have an offense now. There may be some controversy behind Collin Hill, but USC is scoring points with him right now, and Muschamp is right to say that he gives them their best chance to win games right now.
With a bye week, they’ll have more time to work with him and work on that defense. Then they come right back out with a game against the Texas A&M Aggies on Nov. 7, a great opportunity for an upset. After that, they visit the Ole Miss Rebels and host the Missouri Tigers. Those plus a road game against the next team in our power rankings gives them a path to at least a .500 season.
