Tennessee football falls during Week 9 bye in SEC Power Rankings
Lost to Ole Miss Rebels 54-21
Back to back bye weeks did not do the Vanderbilt Commodores any favors. Derek Mason’s team remains the one winless team in the SEC and the one likely win for Tennessee football left on the Vols’ schedule. There is really nothing to celebrate about this program right now, and the bottom may have completely fallen out in this pandemic-shortened season.
Vandy has a head coach in specializes in defense and had two weeks to prepare for the Ole Miss Rebels but still allowed 54 points. They allowed 33 points to the Rebels in the first half alone and all 54 points before the fourth quarter, meaning Ole Miss could have put up 70 if Lane Kiffin hadn’t decided to let up and go easy on them.
Delusional fans may point to the fact that the offense scored its most points all year, but that’s completely irrelevant given how bad Ole Miss’ defense has been all year. Simply put, this team is bad, and it continues to look worse and worse each week regardless of byes. How did they hang tough with the Texas A&M Aggies in the opener?
Anyway, there are still a few chances at upsets. As we mentioned, Vandy hosts Tennessee football later in the year, and they visit the Kentucky Wildcats. But their best chance at a win may be this weekend, when they face a team that is struggling almost as much as they are at this point and the next team in these power rankings.
