Offensive line. Sophomore. 3. player. 839. Scouting Report. Pick Analysis. Darnell Wright

6’6″ 330 pounds; Hometown: Huntington W. Va.

Coming off of a freshman season that earned him freshman All-SEC honors, former five-star prospect and top-10 national recruit Darnell Wright isn’t having the breakout year most Tennessee football fans were hoping for. He’s given up some costly sacks that have killed field position and ultimately limited UT’s offensive production.

In his defense, it’s not entirely Wright’s fault. After it seemed as though Cade Mays would play snaps at right tackle once he was ruled eligible to compete, he’s started the majority of his games at right guard. That’s a position where the Vols have gotten production from Jerome Cravin and freshman Javontez Spraggins so far this season.

So while UT has some talent to open the inside gaps, and for the most part has been pretty efficient in doing so, the right tackle position seems to belong to Wright. He’s a player to watch simply because he has to be better.

While it’s still unclear what Rocky Top’s quarterback situation will look like, it goes without saying that their job will be easier if given ample time to throw in a comfortable pocket. The Arkansas Razorbacks are second in the nation in team interceptions, picking off 10 passes this season and returning three of them for touchdowns.

Wright won’t be responsible for throwing interceptions, but with UT’s track record this season of turning the ball over from the quarterback position, good protection from the right side is essential. Keep an eye out for Wright this Saturday night as the Hogs bring pressure off of the right edge.
