Tennessee football: Ranking Vols four road wins all time at Arkansas
Nov. 15, 1997; War Memorial Stadium; Little Rock, Ark.
The last time Tennessee football played in Little Rock almost ended in disaster. Senior quarterback Peyton Manning led the Vols into this game with a 7-1 record and a No. 5 ranking. More importantly, the Vols were in first place in the SEC East and controlled their own destiny to go to the SEC title game for the first time since the divisions began in 1992.
However, 1992 was the last time the Vols were in the driver’s seat of that division, and then they were upset by the Arkansas Razorbacks, sparking a three-game losing streak. Would they do it again against a 3-5 Hogs team, still led by Danny Ford, and on a four-game losing streak?
Well, it almost happened. Clinging to a 14-10 halftime lead, the Vols fell behind 22-17 to the Hogs in the fourth quarter. Manning had thrown two first-half touchdowns but completely lost his touch in the third quarter.
Things changed in the fourth quarter, though. That deficit woke the Vols up, and Manning found Marcus Nash for a 49-yard touchdown pass, Nash’s second TD of the game. UT then added insurance by getting the ball back and scoring again on a Jamal Lewis touchdown run, so the Vols survived 30-22.
Manning threw for 264 yards and three touchdowns, Nash had five catches for 126 yards and two touchdowns, and Lewis had 124 rushing yards and a touchdown while adding 28 receiving yards and a touchdown. It was ugly, but the Vols survived and eventually won the East.
