These were the turning points in the Tennessee football Volunteers’ loss to the Razorbacks.

Once again, Tennessee football had a horrendous third quarter, costing itself another game. The Vols are now 2-4 and have lost four straight after losing to the Arkansas Razorbacks 24-13 in Fayetteville, Ark. on Saturday.

How did this happen? UT was up 13-0 at halftime thanks to field goals by Brent Cimaglia of 50 and 48 yards and a 16-play 70-yard touchdown drive in between those. They looked to be in complete control of the game.

Then Arkansas scored 24 unanswered points in the third quarter, including touchdowns on their first three drives of the second half. That pretty much explains this, but we’ll dive a bit deeper into what happened here. These are the key moments from Tennessee football’s loss.

Feleipe Franks TD pass to Mike Woods caps off 75-yard drive

This was what got the Arkansas Razorbacks going. They got the ball to open the second half, and down 13-0, they marched 75 yards down the field on 17 plays. The quick slants were there the whole drive.

Kendal Briles appeared miles ahead of Derrick Ansley, and the Hogs converted five third downs. It ended with a one-yard pass to Mike Woods on second and goal, which cut the lead to 13-7, and UT’s pass defense was back to collapsing.

Jarrett Guarantano suffers head injury on run

On the following drive after that first Arkansas touchdown, Tennessee football needed to take the momentum away. A false start by Darnell Wright killed it. That eventually brought up a 3rd and 10, and Jarrett Guarantano was forced to scramble.

Guarantano tried a John Elway-style helicopter dive only to injure his head. That knocked him out of the game, and the Vols had to go to Brian Maurer for four drives after that and then Harrison Bailey for two drives. They only had one first down with Maurer, and it was off a holding penalty. This completely changed the game.

Feleipe Franks 56-yard pass to Mike Woods

After that three-and-out and the Jarrett Guarantano injury, the Arkansas Razorbacks kept their momentum going. Feleipe Franks immediately found Mike Woods for a 56-yard pass. He torched Kenneth George Jr., who was in for Alontae Taylor, on the play.

The pass initially looked like a touchdown, but Woods was ruled out of bounds at the six-yard line. It didn’t matter given how much Tennessee football’s pass defense was struggling. Franks found Blake Kern for a six-yard touchdown over the middle on the next play to give the Hogs a 14-13 lead, but that Woods play set it up.

A.J. Reed 48-yard field goal

A passing onslaught was torching Tennessee football in the third quarter on Saturday, and  Feleipe Franks found Treylon Burks for a 59-yard touchdown pass to put the Arkansas Razorbacks up 21-13. However, it was still a one-score game, but a third straight three-and-out by the Vols got the Hogs the ball back, and they continued to move the ball.

After a poor pass interference call, UT’s defense came alive and got a stop. Arkansas attempted a 48-yard field goal with A.J. Reed. There was hope since he missed a 21-yarder in the first half. He drilled this one, though. That put Arkansas up by two scores and forced the Vols to change up their offensive strategy late in the game.

Harrison Bailey 4th and 4 pass intercepted

When it came to changing their strategy, this is what we were talking about. The Vols replaced Brian Maurer with Harrison Bailey, and their running game came back alive. Eric Gray drove them down to the Arkansas 25-yard line midway through the fourth quarter, and they had a real chance to come back in the game.

However, Jim Chaney kept it on the ground every play until a 4th and 4 came up. Rather than try a field goal to cut it to one score, Jeremy Pruitt went for it. There was a missed pass interference call on the play, but Bailey’s pass was still picked off, and it was the first pass he threw that drive. It was a bad decision, a bad call and sealed Tennessee football’s fate in this game.
