Defeated Vanderbilt Commodores 24-17

Mike Leach’s Mississippi State Bulldogs finally won a game, their first since the opener against the LSU Tigers. They were outgained by over 200 yards against the worst team in the SEC, the Vanderbilt Commodores, and they needed to force five turnovers to win the game. Amidst all that, they were up 17-0 but almost lost the lead before holding on for a 24-17 win.

Simply put, there is nothing to celebrate with this team. They don’t look that much better with the way they beat Vandy. However, Tennessee football and the South Carolina Gamecocks are on a longer losing streak now, and we still can’t look past how badly South Carolina lost while Mississippi State won. As a result, MSU is higher in these SEC Power Rankings.

Leach still doesn’t have his offense working in Starkville, Miss. just yet. He needed a few years to get rolling while with the Washington State Cougars as well, so nobody should panic just yet, but it’s still concerning for this year specifically. Will Rogers gets credit at quarterback for not turning the ball over, though.

Will this translate to anything? Well, this weekend’s game against the Auburn Tigers has been postponed, and next week, they have to visit the Georgia Bulldogs. But they do have two more wins on the table, against the Missouri Tigers at the end of the year but likely before Auburn and, after Georgia, against their heated rival, the next team in these power rankings.
