Running game

Eric Gray did have 31 carries for 123 yards and a touchdown against the Arkansas Razorbacks. Tennessee football was unstoppable in the first half running the ball, and that’s a big reason the Vols built a 13-0 lead. Even without Ty Chandler for almost the whole game (he had just one carry), the Vols were able to take control early thanks to what they did on the ground.

Now, in the second half, the running game fell apart a bit. However, that was due to other issues, including the quarterback rotation and some predictable play-calling. We’ll be addressing those things later in this stock report, but it can’t fall on Gray or the running game. Add in the 27 receiving yards Gray had, and he is carrying this unit right now.

Kickers

Brent Cimaglia and Paxton Brooks have struggled with consistency throughout the year. However, Cimaglia finally returned to his normal self against the Hogs. He hit two field goals of 50 and 48 yards and continued his perfect streak for his career on extra points. The guy we saw the past two years was the one on display in Fayetteville, Ark., and that’s a big deal.

Meanwhile, Brooks was horrendous against the Kentucky Wildcats. However, against Arkansas, he had three punts sail beyond 50 yards, one of which pinned the Hogs inside the 20. There were still some consistency issues, as two failed to go past 40 yards, but he still averaged 45.7 yards per punt on the day.
