Wide receivers

Jim Chaney’s lack of creativity and the injury to Jarrett Guarantano limited what Tennessee football could do at wide receiver in this game. The Vols tried one jump-ball in the end zone, and Brandon Johnson just barely didn’t come down with it. Outside of that, though, there was not much they could do, and as a result, they didn’t garner much attention.

However, what these guys were able to do against the Alabama Crimson Tide still stands. Josh Palmer, Jalin Hyatt, Velus Jones Jr., Ramel Keyton and Johnson have all shown flashes at different points, and if the passing game is able to get back on track, these guys could have a field day in the future. The Arkansas Razorbacks were just a unique opponent.

Offensive tackles

Nobody is really noticing this, but the Vols’ offensive tackles have finally come together. After major struggles by Wanya Morris and Darnell Wright early, they aren’t making as many mistakes. Sure, a couple of penalties are an issue, but the pass protection has greatly improved. They didn’t allow a sack against the Alabama Crimson Tide.

Although they did allow two sacks against Arkansas, one came at the end of the first half, when Jarrett Guarantano was better off going down rather than risking a turnover because a 13-0 lead seemed safe. The other was only for a one-yard loss when Brian Maurer came into the game, and it was Maurer who didn’t make the right decision there. Simply put, this group is improving.
