Pass rush
Don’t believe what Kivon Bennett, Ja’Quain Blakely and Deandre Johnson were able to do at the end of their game against the Arkansas Razorbacks. The Hogs went away from tempo, where they thrive, and Tennessee football finally saw a resurgence of what it had been lacking since the opener against the South Carolina Gamecocks. Expect the Vols to continue to lack.
Remember, LaTrell Bumphus is now out for the year, and this type of pass rush hadn’t shown itself at all for weeks. Why believe it would emerge just as Kendal Briles was forced to slow down? One of the sacks was the result of a well-timed and confusing blitz from Bryce Thompson. In general, though, this isn’t something that seems likely to last.
Backup quarterback play
It was bad, and there’s little reason for it to get better. Brian Maurer’s mobility was supposed to be a spark against Arkansas, but he never made the right decision on the zone-read options. Harrison Bailey had no completions on his first drive, and while he went six-of-eight for 65 yards on UT’s final drive, five of those completions for 41 yards were on check-down plays.
Given the fact that Arkansas was playing prevent while up 24-13, that didn’t mean much. As a result, Tennessee football has still shown nothing behind Jarrett Guarantano, meaning if he’s healthy, Guarantano has to be able to go. The coaches clearly haven’t been able to work enough with the other guys in the offseason.
