The Tennessee football Volunteers can turn this year around.

With a second bye in three weeks, this one unscheduled, Tennessee football has had plenty of time to right the ship under Jeremy Pruitt now. Given the fact that they are 2-4 and on a four-game losing streak, it’s hard to have any faith in them to correct many of their issues.

However, the Vols did go from 2-5 to 8-5 last year. Despite the bad losses, including three by gigantic margins to the Georgia Bulldogs, Kentucky Wildcats and Alabama Crimson Tide and one by a significant margin to the Arkansas Razorbacks, this team may not be dead yet.

Sure, it will be hard with three ranked teams making up their final four opponents, two in the top 10 and one in the top five. But let’s look at why there is still hope. These are five reasons Tennessee football can turn the season around.

5. Vols have already done this before.

Just as we mentioned in our introduction, the Vols have done this before. They were 0-2, 1-4 and 2-5 last year, including losses at home to the Georgia State Panthers and BYU Cougars to start the year. This wasn’t the 2020 BYU team. They and GSU both finished 7-6 at much lower levels, and the Vols had no business losing to any of them.

However, down the stretch of the season, UT won six straight games and seven of eight to close things out. That included five wins over teams that had the record to reach bowl eligibility even if they were facing a postseason ban, two of which were on the road, and another against the South Carolina Gamecocks, who beat Georgia earlier in the year.

Simply put, Tennessee football navigated a tough schedule and came out on the other side with an 8-5 record. Their final win was in the Gator Bowl over the Indiana Hoosiers, and Indiana is 4-0 and in the top 10 this year. Simply put, although the road is tougher, if it could happen then, it can happen now.
