One Volunteers player is the face of 2020-2021 Tennessee Lady Vols women’s basketball.

There’s not a lot of hype behind the Tennessee Lady Vols basketball team entering the 2020-2021 season, but one player is certainly racking up preseason honors. That juxtaposition was on display with multiple stories Tuesday.

The SEC coaches’ predictions for this season tabbed Kellie Harper’s second team on Rocky Top to finish sixth in the league. Dawn Staley’s South Carolina Gamecocks were picked to finish first with Rhyne Howard of the Kentucky Wildcats picked to be the SEC Player of the Year.

Only one Tennessee Lady Vols player made Preseason All-SEC recognition. Senior forward Rennia Davis, last year’s leading scorer and rebounder, was First Team Preseason All-SEC. That’s not the only type of recognition she received on Tuesday either.

Davis, who stands at 6’2″, was one of 50 players named to the preseason Jersey Mike’s Naismith Trophy Watch List. She was also one of just over 30 players named to the Wade Trophy Preseason Watch List.

Both awards recognize the top player in women’s college basketball, and Davis is on both of these watch lists for the second year in a row. It’s her third year on the Naismith watch list, and she was among 30 players to advance to the midseason watch list last year.

Last year, Davis averaged 18 points and just over eight rebounds a game. She earned First Team All-SEC and Coaches’ All-American honors. In addition to being on those watch lists, she’s also on the preseason Cheryl Miller Watch List, which recognizes the nation’s top small forward every year. This is her third year in a row on that watch list.

Simply put, there is tons of hype for Davis this year on the Tennessee Lady Vols. She is one of four seniors but only two, along with Kasiyahna Kushkituah, remaining from that 2017 recruiting class that was No. 1 in the nation and supposed to restore the program to prominence. This is her team, and it will go as far as she takes it.
