Tennessee football: Five takeaways from Vols’ 30-17 loss at Auburn

3. The quarterback controversy continues.

That pick-six by Jarrett Guarantano brought back the quarterback controversy that continues to plague Tennessee football. Guarantano played one more drive, one that ended in a missed field goal, but didn’t throw it once. After that, Jeremy Pruitt and Jim Chaney turned to five-star freshman Harrison Bailey, who may be the quarterback of the future.

Down 27-10, Bailey then led the Vols on a nine-play 75-yard drive. Although Eric Gray did most of the work, Bailey was three-of-four for 29 yards on that drive. Bailey then completed his first three passes on the next drive for 39 yards and later converted a 4th and 15 pass to Jacob Warren for 18 yards, showing even more promise.

For the game, Bailey completed seven-of-10 passes and threw for 86 yards. Guarantano completed 15-of-23 passes for 156 yards and also had a touchdown run. These are clearly the two guys that Pruitt and Chaney will roll with in the future.

However, which single person they go with next week is a major question. The fans now want Bailey with the way he looked on those final two drives, and he did drive the Vols into field goal range on two drives at the Arkansas Razorbacks. Guarantano is still the veteran, though.
