Blocked for 222 rushing yards

The best aspect of Tennessee football’s performance Saturday was the run game. The Vols ran for 222 yards and torched the Auburn Tigers on the ground. If they hadn’t gone to the air in key moments when they shouldn’t have, they would have had at least six more points and prevented an Auburn touchdown from happening.

Trey Smith was the main reason for that incredible performance. He was the Vols’ best interior blocker, as he has been all year, and helped propel Eric Gray and Ty Chandler to lots of yards on the ground. Brandon Kennedy and Cade Mays played well also, but Smith was the guy who did the bulk of the work and deserves the shoutout here.

If you need to question why, just look at the Vols’ first touchdown run. Trey Smith laid the block that sprung Jarrett Guarantano free for the nine-yard touchdown run on the designed quarterback draw play. Check out how impressive that block was.

All night, Smith came through on big plays like that. UT’s rushing attack has continued to be a positive aspect of its game, even if lack of quarterback play and solid play-calling holds it back. Smith is a huge part of that attack.
