Tennessee football: Top five Vols performers in 30-17 loss at Auburn
22 carries,173 yards; 3 receptions, 49 yards; 1 TD
If two players gave it everything they had for Tennessee football on Saturday, Eric Gray and Kivon Bennett were those players. Gray had a historically great performance and was easily the player of the game.
On the night, Gray’s 173 yards and one rushing touchdown would be impressive enough. However, his 49 receiving yards also led the team. Ty Chandler fought hard and was a great No. 2 power back, but Gray continues to prove himself as the superstar.
Gray had a 33-yard run to convert a 3rd and 15 on the Vols’ first touchdown drive. He then had a 25-yard reception on their field goal drive. In the third quarter, down 13-10, he gained 49 of 65 yards to put UT in position to take the lead before Jarrett Guarantano’s pick-six.
When Harrison Bailey came into the game, Gray had a 27-yard run on UT’s final touchdown drive and scored the touchdown himself. Simply put, he was Tennessee football’s biggest star and carried the offense.
Nearly half of the Vols’ 464 total yards, 222 of them, came from Gray. Over the last four games, he has gone over 100 yards three times, including each of the past two games. UT is wasting his talent with poor play-calling and no passing game.
