Pass blocking

Offensive line play was largely a positive for Tennessee football on Saturday because of the way the interior blocking went. However, that covered up for many of the issues in pass blocking that haven’t been resolved.

Darnell Wright missed another block that caused a sack. UT couldn’t pick up the Auburn Tigers’ blitz all game and allowed four on the day. An underrated part of this is how much the running backs are struggling to block. Ty Chandler, a senior, missed one block that resulted in another sack, and Eric Gray is still unreliable in this field. In general, this issue isn’t getting any better.

Quarterback play

There’s a ton of hope that Jeremy Pruitt and Jim Chaney will finally make the switch from Jarrett Guarantano to Harrison Bailey at quarterback. Bailey had a touchdown drive when he first came into the game at Auburn. However, that drive came when the Tigers had a 27-10 lead.

Given the fact that Bailey and Guarantano appear to be the only two options for the coaches right now, the Vols probably don’t have a lot of hope. Bailey has shown some talent but nothing spectacular when in the game so far, and Guarantano, even if he makes most of the right plays, is still good for one awful play a game.

As a result, the quarterback issues will continue to plague Tennessee football. It’s nowhere near the only issue with this five-game losing streak, but it’s clearly one not going anywhere. At this point, if you’re still putting stock in the position, it’s time to give up.
