The 2021 Pensacola, Fla. defensive back decommitted from the Tennessee football Volunteers.

Negative news continues to hit Tennessee football. On the heels of a five-game losing streak and the news of this week’s game being postponed, Jeremy Pruitt has now suffered a decommitment from one of his Florida prospects.

Damarius McGhee, a cornerback for 2021, announced that he was reopening his recruitment. A three-star on Rivals and four-star on 247Sports and ESPN, McGhee comes out of Pensacola Catholic High School in Pensacola, Fla. and stands at 6’0″ 162 pounds.

Part of the red-hot summer recruitment period for Tennessee football, McGhee had been committed to the program since the beginning of August. He announced his decision on Twitter Thursday evening.

With McGhee’s decommitment, UT now only has three prospects from the state of Florida and 26 commitments for its 2021 class. It is still ranked in the top 10, but that could change if other dominoes continue to fall.

In terms of talent at defensive back, the Vols still have Jay Jones, Edwin White and De’Shawn Rucker, and Rucker is another player from Florida. They also have athletes Elijah Howard, Kaemen Marley and Christian Charles. All of them could play defensive back as well.

We should also note that McGhee’s commitment comes less than a week after Tiyon Evans, the nation’s top junior college running back, announced his commitment to Rocky Top. He was a player who had also decommitted before recommitting.

Could McGhee make the decision to recommit? Well, the LSU Tigers are now a unanimous favorite to land him on the Rivals Future Cast. However, there are no 247Sports Crystal Ball predictions, and there is no school listed as an official leader. UT is also the favorite by a majority on the Rivals Fan Future Cast.

Simply put, Tennessee football may still be in play. If they do lose out on McGhee, though, they have other avenues to keep this class elite. However, they may have to right the ship on the field, or they could lose a lot more talent.
