The Tennessee Lady Vols host the WKU Lady Toppers. Here is our women’s basketball Volunteers preview.

After a ton of offseason drama and a slew of cancelations this week, the first basketball game on Rocky Top will take place on Saturday. Kellie Harper’s Tennessee Lady Vols will host the Western Kentucky Lady Toppers in the season-opener for both teams.

Coming off a 21-10 record in Harper’s first year with no postseason due to the pandemic, UT had its opener Friday night canceled. Its scheduled opponent that night, the Florida A&M Rattlers, decided to shut down the season due to the pandemic.

Four of the five major sporting events were postponed or canceled this week, including that FAMU matchup, men’s Tennessee basketball’s two home games against the Charlotte 49ers and VCU Rams and Tennessee football’s matchup with the Vanderbilt Commodores. Here is all the information you need for the Tennessee Lady Vols’ opener to the 2020-2021 season.

Harper enters this year with a new-look team. Jazmine Massengill, one of last year’s starting guards who was second on the team in assists, has transferred. Starting forward Lou Brown has graduated. Zaay Green, who played two games last year but was set to have a big return off an injury this year, transferred along with Massengill.

Graduate transfers Keyen Green and Jordan Walker could replace Brown and Massengill respectively. Incoming freshmen Destiny Salary, Tess Darby and Marta Suárez are all expected to provide more depth.

There is plenty of returning talent to the Tennessee Lady Vols, though. Center Tamari Key and guard Jordan Horston are back after impressive freshmen campaigns as starters. Wings Rennia Davis and Rae Burrell were last year’s leading scorers and rebounders and are both back.

Forward Jaiden McCoy and center Kasiyahna Kushkituah are both experienced seniors who provide more depth. Jessie Rennie and Emily Saunders could help with that as they enter their sophomore campaigns as well.

Simply put, Harper has reconstructed her team with a great length advantage, solid depth and multiple threats. Adding Rennie, Darby and Walker allows her to focus more on guards who can shoot rather than ones with just size and athleticism, which should allow her to run the inside-out system she has been trying to run since arriving on Rocky Top.

Led by third-year head coach Greg Collins, WKU is coming off a 22-7 season in which it finished second in Conference USA with a 14-4 league record. Only three of five starters are back and only one of WKU’s three leading scorers to average double figures last year is back.

However, senior forward Raneem Elgedawy, the one scorer back to average double figures, was actually the leading scorer and rebounder last year, averaging 17.6 points and 11 rebounds a game. As a result, she could be a difficult matchup for the Tennessee Lady Vols, and they can’t take this game lightly.
