Defeated Mississippi State Bulldogs 31-24
Honestly, struggling a bit to put away the Mississippi State Bulldogs, even if Mike Leach’s team has improved, wasn’t going to elevate Lane Kiffin’s program in our SEC Power Rankings. The former Tennessee football coach is certainly making a splash his first year in Oxford and is providing reason for encouragement, but that wasn’t too impressive.
Still, Kiffin emerged victorious against Leach in the first Egg Bowl matchup between the two, and he’s in the process of a very solid first year at Ole Miss. We mentioned that key win over the Kentucky Wildcats in our previous slide. That one win over a three-win team put them one spot ahead of UK. It came down to the missed extra point in overtime.
Ole Miss’ other wins, though, in addition to MSU are against the Vanderbilt Commodores and South Carolina Gamecocks. As a result, it’s safe to say that they don’t have the most impressive resume They belong in the bottom half while near the middle of the league rankings.
The rest of the slate for Ole Miss is up in the air. They have nothing scheduled for this week, but they had matchups with the Texas A&M Aggies and LSU Tigers postponed. It’s likely they face LSU Dec. 12 and A&M Dec. 19, but that’s tentative. Still, LSU gives them a chance at a .500 season.
