The Tennessee Lady Vols host the Buccaneers. Here is our women’s basketball Volunteers preview.

Coming off a dominant 87-47 win over the Western Kentucky Lady Toppers to open the season on Saturday, the Tennessee Lady Vols will be back in action Tuesday night. They will once again be playing in Thompson-Boling Arena and looking to move to 2-0 in Kellie Harper’s second season.

Heading into The Summitt in Knoxville are the East Tennessee State University Buccaneers. Led by eighth-year head coach Brittney Ezell, ETSU is coming off a 62-56 win over the Longwood Lancers last Saturday, which was their opener.

Last year, Harper’s tenure on Rocky Top began with a trip to Johnson City, Tenn. to face the Bucs on the road. The Tennessee Lady Vols won that opener 72-68 in a close contest. Here is all the information you need for this matchup.

With four of five starters back, ETSU appears to have the experience to be able to rebound from last year’s disastrous 9-21 season. However, they lost leading scorer Micah Scheetz, there are nine newcomers, and they have no seniors on this year’s team.

As a result, the Bucs will be driven by a youth movement once again. However, they still should be much better, and given the way they put up a fight last year, Rocky Top can’t afford to take this game lightly.

Historically, UT leads the all-time series with ETSU 23-2-1. The series dates back to the mid-1920s, as the two schools faced each other in 1924, 1925 and 1926. Big Orange Country is on a 21-game winning streak in the series and hasn’t lost to the Bucs since 1971, when they fell 62-56 on the road. They haven’t lost ever since the Pat Summitt era began in 1974.

After this game, the Tennessee Lady Vols begin a mini non-conference road trip. They will visit the West Virginia Mountaineers in the SEC/Big 12 Challenge on Sunday, Dec. 6, and they will stay in the Big 12 with a visit to the Texas Longhorns a week later on Sunday, Dec. 13. Their next home game will be a week after that, on Saturday, Dec. 20 against the Jackson State Tigers.
