Tennessee football vs. Florida: 10 keys to the game
9. Non-offensive touchdowns
Both Tennessee football and the Florida Gators have two non-offensive touchdowns on the year. Florida has a fumble return for a touchdown by Zachary Carter against the Arkansas Razorbacks. Meanwhile, it had a punt return for a touchdown by Kadarius Toney just last week, which gave it a 14-10 lead over the Kentucky Wildcats as it struggled in the first half.
The Vols have two defensive touchdowns. Henry To’o To’o had a pick-six that proved to be the difference in their 31-27 season-opening win over the South Carolina Gamecocks. Then Kivon Bennett recovered a fumble in the end zone against the Georgia Bulldogs. Bennett, however, has been dismissed from the team.
Scoring non-offensive touchdowns isn’t the only story here, though. Both teams allow them as well. Jarrett Guarantano has thrown three pick-sixes, and he and Eric Gray have each had a fumble returned for a touchdown. Meanwhile, two of Kyle Trask’s three interceptions this year have been returned for touchdowns.
Both teams have clearly been involved in scoring and allowing non-offensive touchdowns this year, so if either gets one on Saturday, they could have a big advantage. That could be a critical factor with inclement weather possible at Neyland Stadium in Knoxville.
