Defensive grades

Defensive line: D+

There was no push from the defensive line all night. That was a huge reason Kyle Trask had such an easy time throwing the ball. Sure, the Vols did a good job stopping the run, and that would seem to have something to do with the defensive line, but the lack of pressure in the passing game was so horrendous that this unit still got a below average grade.

Linebackers: B-

Yes, the outside linebackers struggled for Tennessee football with Kivon Bennett’s dismissal. The same was true for the inside linebackers in coverage. However, they were incredible at stopping the run, holding Florida to 19 yards on 17 carries. Henry To’o To’o led the way, and that was enough for us to give this unit an above average grade. They carried the way.

Secondary: D-

Alontae Taylor is the one player keeping this from being an F. He had a great fourth down deflection and was never beat. However, Kyle Trask threw for four touchdowns and over 430 yards. Everybody else got torched, and that’s enough for us to give this unit a horrible grade.

Overall defensive grade: C-

The defense was actually better than the offense thanks to the inside linebackers and Alontae Taylor. Holding the Florida Gators to just 31 points and keeping the unit in a funk for much of both halves were some positives.
