The Tennessee Lady Vols visit the WVU Mountaineers in the SEC/Big 12 Challenge. Here is our Volunteers preview.

For the first time this year, the Tennessee Lady Vols will hit the road and face a Power Five opponent. Kellie Harper’s team travels to Morgantown, W. Va. to face the West Virginia Mountaineers in the SEC/Big 12 Challenge.

UT is coming off a 67-50 win over the ETSU Bucs, which followed an 87-47 win over the Western Kentucky Lady Toppers. Meanwhile, WVU is coming off an 80-51 win over the North Alabama Lions. However, they already have a Power Five win, having beaten the LSU Tigers 62-42.

This is the first of two games against Big 12 teams on back to back Sundays, broken up by a home matchup with the Furman Paladins this Thursday. Next week, UT travels to Austin to face the Texas Longhorns. Here is all the information you need for this Tennessee Lady Vols matchup.

Led by head coach Mike Carey, who is in his ninth year on the job, West Virginia has four starters back from last year’s team, which went 17-12. Included in that returning talent is last year’s leading scorer, guard Kysre Gondrezick, who is averaging 21.7 points per game and has an amazing 72.2 true shooting percentage through three games this year.

WVU has played one more game than UT because the Lady Vols’ opener against the Florida A&M Rattlers was canceled after FAMU decided to shut down it’s women’s basketball season due to COVID. Up to this point, though, things have gone smoothly for Rocky Top specifically.

Historically, UT has never lost to WVU, holding a 6-0 advantage in the series. The last time they met was in Charleston, W. Va. in November of 2007, and the Lady Vols won 67-49. This is the first time the two teams will face off in Morgantown, W. Va. since 1986, when UT won 74-58.
