In the midst of a six-game losing streak, Tennessee football takes the field against the Vanderbilt Commodores in Nashville Saturday afternoon trying to right the ship. This will be a battle to avoid last place in the SEC.

Vandy comes into this game with an interim head coach in Todd Fitch, who will be coaching his first game in that role after the firing of Derek Mason. Their last outing was a 41-0 loss to the Missouri Tigers.

Last year, the Vols ended a three-game losing streak against the Commodores with a 28-10 win. That clinched a 7-5 regular season record for them, their first winning season since 2016. Eric Gray rushed for 246 yards, a school-record for a true freshman, and three touchdowns. He had a 94-yard touchdown, the longest in SEC history for a freshman.

At that time, they were in the middle of what would become an eight-game winning streak into this year. The morale on Rocky Top is a lot different in this game, as Jeremy Pruitt’s seat is getting warm, and calls to fire him could hit a fever pitch if he loses this game.

The Commodores come into this game with a rash of opt-outs, injuries and transfers along with an interim head coach, leaving them severely depleted. They are in danger of having a winless season, and this will be their best chance at a win.

Up next for Tennessee football will be a home game against the Texas A&M Aggies on Saturday, Dec. 19. Meanwhile, the Commodores will take a trip to the Georgia Bulldogs. Both teams will kick off at noon ET.
