Tennessee Lady Vols at No. 23 Texas postponed
The Tennessee Lady Vols at the UT Longhorns have been postponed.
For the second straight Sunday, the Tennessee Lady Vols were set to have a road game against a Big 12 team. Last week, Kellie Harper’s team suffered a heartbreaker in overtime to the West Virginia Mountaineers in the SEC/Big 12 Challenge, its only loss of the season.
However, just before tipoff at 5 p.m. ET on ESPN, the game ended up being postponed. According to UTSports, there were contract tracing issues within the Texas program. As of right now, a future make-up date is unknown for the game.
Fresh off a dominating 90-53 win over the Furman Paladins this past Thursday, the Tennessee Lady Vols entered the game with a 3-1 record and looking for a major Power Five win. This would have also been a bigger opportunity to right the ship from last week’s loss.
Texas, meanwhile, is ranked No. 23 in the AP Poll and was coming off a 73-48 win over the Idaho Vandals last Wednesday. They are led by first-year head coach Vic Schaefer, who had spent the last eight years with the Mississippi State Bulldogs. Schaefer replaced Karen Aston, who had spent the past eight years in Austin.
At 4-1, Texas’ only loss so far this year was a 66-61 heartbreaker to the Texas A&M Aggies, who are now ranked No. 10 in both polls. While that’s nothing to be ashamed of, the Lady Vols would have been Texas’ best win all year. To be fair, the same holds true for the Lady Vols if they had won this game.
Last year, these two teams faced off at Thompson-Boling Arena in Knoxville, Tenn., with Texas handing Harper her first loss as head coach on Rocky Top. Obviously, the Tennessee Lady Vols are now underdogs and looking for a different result. Up next for Rocky Top is a Dec. 20 home game against the Jackson State Tigers. Texas will host the Kansas Jayhawks Thursday.
