Offensive grades part II

Wide receivers: A-

Josh Palmer missed an easy one-on-one opportunity in the first half. However, almost everything else was perfect. Velus Jones Jr. had 125 yards and 2 touchdowns, Jalin Hyatt had 81 yards and a touchdown, and Palmer still had 53 yards. These guys did their part to help the young quarterbacks, which is why they get an A-.

Tight ends: B-

Honestly, pass protection was once again horrendous, and the tight ends have to get some blame for that. Still, Princeton Fant had a touchdown reception. That’s enough for us to give this unit an above average grade, as they finally came through on the receiving end.

Offensive line: B+

This is partially due to the unit doing what it was supposed to do. The Vols’ interior line had its way with a Vanderbilt Commodores defense that was missing three linemen. However, they did their job. The rushing attack alone would have warranted an A, but the pass protection we criticized and the nature of how bad Vandy’s defensive line was forced us to give the unit a B+.

Overall offensive grade: B+

At the end of the day, Tennessee football scored 42 points and gained over 500 yards of total offense. Even against a horrendous Vanderbilt Commodores defense that was severely depleted, that still has to be an above average grade.
