Tennessee basketball vs. Appalachian St.: Live stream, game time, TV and radio
Here is our Tennessee basketball Volunteers preview against the App State Mountaineers.
Coming off back to back wins against Power Five schools to open the season last week and ranked No. 10 in both polls, Tennessee basketball stays at home to begin playing the first of four games over a nine-day span Tuesday. All of these games will be against mid-major programs.
The Appalachian State Mountaineers come in from North Carolina with a 4-1 record to take on the 2-0 Vols Tuesday night. They enter the game on a two-game winning streak, having just beaten the Charlotte 49ers on the road 61-57.
UT was actually supposed to open up the season against that same Charlotte team one day before Thanksgiving before all the COVID-related cancelations happened. Here is all the information you need for Tennessee basketball’s Tuesday night matchup.

This is the second meeting between the Vols and Mountaineers under Rick Barnes and the sixth all-time in a series that dates back to 1986. UT has never lost to the school located in Boone, N.C., and there are actually plenty of connections between the two.
One of the Vols’ wins over Appalachian State came in 2001 under Buzz Peterson, who was in his first year on Rocky Top. Just two years earlier, Peterson was head coach of the Mountaineers, a job he held from 1996 to 2000 and then in 2009-2010. That’s where he saw his greatest success, winning three Southern Conference titles and making the NCAA Tournament in 2000.
Led by second-year head coach Dustin Kerns, Appalachian State is coming off an 18-15 season in which it went 11-9 in the Sun Belt. They lost three starters from last year’s team but did return leading scorer Justin Forrest and have seen the emergence of Donovan Gregory, Adrian Delph and Gregory Lewis, all of whom are averaging double figures this year.
With their only loss coming in overtime to the Bowling Green Falcons, they could be tough. Tennessee basketball can’t take them lightly given its recent offensive struggles. However, if the Vols’ defense plays the way it played against the Colorado Buffaloes and the Cincinnati Bearcats, this could turn into an easy blowout.
