Paxton Brooks

Nobody played better than Tennessee football’s punter this past Saturday. In his main job, Paxton Brooks averaged 47 yards a punt on five punts Saturday. Three of them pinned the Vanderbilt Commodores inside the 15-yard line, and only one of them didn’t either sail beyond 50 yards or pin Vandy inside the 10-yard line.

Brooks was elite beyond punting as well, though. All of his kickoffs pinned Vandy at the 25-yard line or further back, and he completed a 31-yard pass to Henry To’o To’o on a fake punt. If Brooks keeps this up into next year, he’ll be restoring the Punter U title to Rocky Top.

Velus Jones Jr.

For the second straight game, Velus Jones Jr. was the Vols’ top wide receiver. Most of his damage against the Florida Gators came in garbage time, as he had four catches for 70 yards and a score. However, this past week against the Commodores proved his improvement has been legit.

Jones had seven receptions for 125 yards and two touchdowns. One of them came in the first half to put the Vols up by two scores, and the other one was a 74-yard game-clinching score. Now, Jones has had his most productive receiving year ever, and it looks like he had been under-used up to this point.
