Defeated Mississippi State Bulldogs 24-10

Out of the blue, after a solid win to close out the season and remain in the top five of our SEC Power Rankings, the Auburn Tigers decided to fire Gus Malzahn after eight seasons on the job. They became the third SEC team to move on from their head coach.

There is no shame in the losses they had this year outside of that hiccup to the South Carolina Gamecocks. The other teams to beat them were the Alabama Crimson Tide, Texas A&M Aggies and Georgia Bulldogs. However, they did look ugly against Mississippi State and even in their last win over Tennessee football.

Auburn fans were probably tired of how stagnant the program had become. Still, by beating Mississippi State, they were able to finish the year above .500 and likely remain a top 25 team. Regardless of what people may think about Malzahn, that’s an accomplishment.

Now, the regular season is over, but it’s likely this team does get to play in a bowl game. Defensive coordinator Kevin Steele will be the interim head coach when they play in that game, but regardless of what happens in that outing, they at least finished the year with a winning record.
