Lost to Auburn Tigers 24-10

Similar to the South Carolina Gamecocks, the Mississippi State Bulldogs have one win over the Vanderbilt Commodores and one shocking upset on the year. USC’s was more impressive, over the Auburn Tigers, while MSU’s was over a struggling LSU Tigers team that didn’t do anything impressive until this past weekend.

However, the Gamecocks simply rolled over and got blown out down the stretch of this season, particularly after Will Muschamp was fired. Under first-year head coach Mike Leach, the Bulldogs have fought hard in recent weeks. They only lost to the Georgia Bulldogs by a touchdown and have shown promise throughout the year.

As a result, Mississippi State is slightly higher than South Carolina in our SEC Power Rankings. It’s only slightly, though, as both teams belong near the bottom of the list. They are in a bottom tier outside of the bottom tier, if that makes sense.

There’s one more chance for Leach to pull off a huge upset, as the Bulldogs host the Missouri Tigers this weekend. It’ll be another battle of two first-year head coaches, but a win would send MSU into the offseason on a very high note. They still have something to play for.
