Tennessee football vs. Aggies: 10 keys to the game
8. Number of field goals kicked in the game
At the beginning of the season, we would have said that this would be an advantage for Tennessee football. Brent Cimaglia was supposed to be the biggest place kicking advantage in the SEC. However, Cimaglia was banged up all year, forcing him to play very inconsistent at times and show a major regression.
Now, Cimaglia has opted out of the season as well. Walk-on place kicker Toby Wilson appears to have taken his spot, as Wilson kicked all extra points for the Vols last weekend. However, he still hasn’t kicked a field goal, and there’s a chance punter Paxton Brooks could get his number called for actual field goals. Neither has ever kicked a field goal at this level.
Meanwhile, the Texas A&M Aggies have an elite kicker in Seth Small who isn’t always consistent but has Cimaglia’s leg. He has made seven of nine attempts this year, and don’t forget that he has made three of six from beyond 50 yards in his career.
Simply put, if multiple field goals are kicked in this game, Texas A&M could have a major advantage. Small has missed one extra point in his career, and he’s a reliable kicker. The same can’t be said about the Vols’ situation at this point.
