A recap of the first day of the Tennessee Vols early signing period leads our Dec. 17 Volunteers news.

It’s a weird time for the Tennessee Vols. Four years ago, we’d only be covering basketball at this time and maybe some bowl preparations. Then we started covering the early signing period along with those two things.

Now, though, we are covering the early signing period along with basketball games and weekly football games, as the regular season still is not yet over. Our morning update on Rocky Top, however, leads with more coverage of the early signing period. It wasn’t as eventful as previous years, but there is still plenty of news for us to get to.

Beyond that, we have a preview of a women’s basketball game to touch on. We’ll close with news surrounding a former head coach and former football staff member that might be intriguing as well. Let’s start, however, with the early signing period.

Jeremy Pruitt speaks on 2021 recruits who signed – Brent Hubbs, VolQuest.com

On Wednesday, Tennessee Vols football head coach Jeremy Pruitt held his weekly press conference and actually touchdown on multiple topics. He still continue previewing the Texas A&M Aggies but also addressed the early signing period, as UT picked up a commitment and signed 16 of its 22 commitments. Here’s a bit of what Pruitt said.

"“Just looking at these guys, I can’t say enough about our staff, our recruiting staff, our administration, academics – recruiting is a team effort so everybody in our program really works hard at recruiting. We do it every single day. Our players are probably the best recruiters that we have.”"

Kellie Harper previews Lady Vols next two games – UTSports

The Tennessee Lady Vols women’s basketball program will visit the No. 15 ranked Indiana Hoosiers at 4 p.m. ET Thursday. This is an added game for both teams, who had games last weekend canceled. After that, UT will host the Jackson State Tigers on Sunday at noon ET. Harper previewed both games Wednesday. Here’s a bit of what she said about Indiana.

"“They’re intelligent, very physical and very intense. Coach (Teri) Moren has done an excellent job at Indiana. At my prior stop at Missouri State, we were able to play Indiana, so I understand what this team is all about.”"

Former UT staff member joins Arkansas State – Dan Harralson, VolsWire.com

Last Saturday, former Tennessee Vols football head coach Butch Jones was hired as head coach of the Arkansas State Red Wolves program. Jones has brought on former UT quality control coach Derrick Lett to coach wide receivers.

"Lett was at Tennessee from 2013-14 under Jones, working with running backs, wide receivers and punt return specialists. He has coached running backs at Yale since 2015."
