The Tennessee basketball Volunteers are in 2022 Knoxville, Tenn. point guard Brian Edwards’ top six.

Rick Barnes has a five-star and a four-star committed to Tennessee basketball for 2021 on the heels of a top five 2020 class. However, he’s clearly making sure the Vols aren’t going anywhere, as now Rocky Top is trending for an elite 2022 player.

UT made the top six for local point guard B.J. Edwards. Standing somewhere between 6’2″ and 6’3″ and 165 to 170 pounds, Edwards is a four-star across all recruiting services out of Knoxville Catholic High School.

Joining Tennessee basketball on the list are the Virginia Tech Hokies, Wake Forest Demon Deacons, Georgia Bulldogs and Florida Gators. Edwards announced the schools Saturday evening on Twitter.

Given the fact that he is a local product, it would seem that the Vols have an advantage when targeting Edwards. The five-star in Barnes’ 2021 class is another in-state point guard, Kennedy Chandler out of Memphis.

Of course, Chandler could be a deterrent when it comes to playing time, but he could be a one-and-done prospect and gone by the time Edwards arrives. On the other hand, Edwards is not a one-and-done prospect, so even if Chandler stays an extra year, Edwards could probably be a backup point guard his first season anyway.

Lots of this depends on who else commits to UT, as they have nobody in their 2022 class just yet. Barnes’ recent successes on the recruiting trail with guards suggest he could land even more high-profile talent.

Assuming everybody committed signs, 2021 will mark the third straight year Barnes has at least signed one five-star prospect. Either way, though, Edwards would be a great addition, as he clearly is a talented prospect.

Currently, there are no favorites on the Rivals Future Cast or the 247Sports Crystal Ball to land Edwards. However, Tennessee basketball is a near-unanimous favorite to land him on the Rivals Fan Future Cast. That combined with him being a Knoxville product suggests the Vols are probably the most likely team to land him right now.
